Cry it out right or wrong?

If you do the cry it out method your son will learn to just fall asleep on his own within 2 weeks or so. My friend felt bad doing it that way but now their son is almost 4 now and he still needs to be put to sleep & he can't just go to sleep on his own. So I say just let him cry, it wont cause any damage.
